  3. The mainland became the German colony of Tanganyika in 1884. The Sultanate of Zanzibar became a British protectorate in 1890.

  7. *  1962 Nyerere becomes president.
  8. *  1963 Zanzibar independent.
  9. *  1964 Zanzibar signs union with Tanganyika to form Tanzania. 
  10. *  1977 One-party state. Mainland and Zanzibari parties form CCM.
  11. *  1985 Nyerere resigns as president. President Mwinyi, former vice- president, begins relaxation of Nyerere's socialist policies.
  12. *  1990 Nyerere resigns from CCM chair. Mwinyi becomes new chairman.
  13. *  1992 Political parties allowed.
